Top 10 Movies of 2014

Here is a countdown of my best 10 movies of last year.

10. Coming at number ten we have Godzilla. The world’s most famous monster makes 126th appearance in the 127th reboot and this one features other monsters known as Kaiju who fly and eat nuclear waste. Breaking Bad were over the moon as they heard Heisenberg was staring in this movie. Despite Godzilla having only 15 minutes of total screen time, the movie overall is very entertaining. Kudos to the visual effect team for doing a brilliant job portraying the monsters. An awesome comeback after the failure of 1999 and this time they stayed true to the original story and made Godzilla male.

9. At number 9 is American Sniper. Based of autobiography of Chris Kyle – the most lethal sniper in American military history, is this literally a war thriller. This movie’s portrayal is war is truly genuine, showing the toll it takes on the soldiers on the battlefield. Bradley Cooper has come a long way from the Hangover movies. This has to be right up there amongst Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List.

8. At number eight is Interstellar. This was probably the most awaited movie of the year and it didn’t disappoint. Set sometime in the future where Humanity is facing a food shortage and the only hope of survival is to try and inhabit another planet. Christopher Nolan delivers another one of his masterpieces.  Matthew McConaughey plays NASA astronaut Cooper alongside Anne Hathaway. The visuals in this movie were spectacular and it has been praised for its accurate depiction of space. Don’t worry too much if you don’t understand it the first time though; like many of Nolan’s works it is quite hard to fully grasp the whole concept first time.

7. At number seven we have everyone’s mum’s favourite Gone Girl. Making movies of out books is becoming quite a thing now. This psychological thriller is about a typical suburban couple and when Ben Affleck’s  wife(a famous child author) goes missing, the whole country’s attention turns to this neighbourhood. A husband like Affleck whose every move makes him look more suspicious and his shady relationship with his twin sister work together to provide the perfect recipe for a thrilling ride that will keep you guessing who did it! Its very hard to talk about this movie without giving too much away so its best you watch without spoilers.

6. At number six we have Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel played a huge gamble when they decided to they were making this life action space epic and aren’t we glad they did. Based on the what some say are the Avengers “B” team, this is based a group made up of Starlord, Rocket, Drax, Gamora and Groot played by Vin Diesel on their journey to fight Thanos’ lieutenant Ronan the Accuser. If you are Marvel fan this is a must and if you are not then you will thoroughly entertained nevertheless.

5. Coming in at number 5 we have The Imitation Game. Based on the life of famous Computer Scientist, Mathematician and Inventor Alan Turing it is set during the latter years of World War II. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch Turing, the movie follows Turing along with other Scientists/Mathematicians as they try to break the Nazi Enigma Code. Cumberbatch gives one of the best performances yet as his character has to battle through unacceptance from his peers and well as hes homosexuality.

4. At number 4 we have Captain America: The Winter Soldier . The second installment in the franchise follows Cap as he tries to prevent an attack on SHIELD by Hydra. The movie features some of the actions scenes in any comic book related movies.

3. Making the top three we have XMEN : Days of Future Past. Bryan Singer who directed the first two movies of the original trilogy is back and has rewritten the timeline of the whole XMEN Universe. The movie follows the Wolverine as he travels back in time to prevent the Sentinels from destroying all humanity in the future and in order to do so he must team up with a young and somewhat broken Prof Charles, a young Magneto out for Vengeance, Raven and Quicksilver. Game of Thrones fans will particularly like this movie as it features Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) as military scientist Bolivar Trask.

2. At runners-up position we have the epic conclusion to the Middle-Earth Saga and my personal favourite                   The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies. This is the final installment of The Hobbit trilogy and shows the final battle for the throne of Erabor. The dwarves accompanied by their trusty burglar, Legolas and Gandalf must kill Smaug and show their worthiness to be Kings under the mountain. Peter Jackson provides another visual masterpiece  with cutting edge 3D depictions of everything Middle Earthy. So whenever you have say 20 hours to kills please go on ahead the watch all SIX of the movies. If you feel sad like how I after watching this; seeing this is the final installment…don’t be as we are yet to see  The Silmarillion in the big screen and in the words of Gandalf – “it is in the hands of Men of must place our hope”

1. And finally, taking out the top spot …Drum Roll please…the best movie of the 2014 is Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. When i first saw this movie, I knew it was gonna be somewhere in the top 3. This is a sequel to the Rise of the Planet of Apes (2011) . This movie is outstanding in all aspects. Andy Serkis shows why he is the best in the business when it comes to portraying CGI characters whether it be Gollum or Caesar. The movie features a great moral dilemma between the humans and apes as they try to figure out how to co-exist. The action scenes are spectacular..and come on whose doesn’t wanna see apes riding horses rearing shit up! Safe to say The Planet of the Apes franchise has come a long way from shitty monkey costumes and even worse dialogues. Apes!….Together ..Strong!!

Thanks for reading guys and let me know what were  your favourite movies of the year. 🙂
