Mangalyaan Enters Mars Orbit

Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also called Mangalyaan, Hindi for “Mars-craft” has enter the planet’s orbit on the 24th of September, 2014. The satellite was launched on  5th November, 2013 by the  Indian Space Research Organisation India’s equivalent of NASA making India the the first nation from Asia to successfully send a satellite into Mars orbit, joining US, Russia and the European Union.

The entire mission is said to have cost $74m, far less compared to the recent Sci-Fi thriller Gravity whose budget was $100m.

The mission is said to be a “Technology Demonstrator” and aims to develop technologies required for design, planning and management for future interplanetary missions.
