The Chinese government have arrested hackers would were connected to the breach of Office of Personnel Management’s database. The hack exposed more than 22 millions current and former federal employees. The arrest took place in September and has been carried out in order to reduce tension between Chinese government and US government, official’s say.

I think that China has realized that this is an issue that really matters to the United States, and that if they’re going to continue to manage the relationship with us in a positive way, they had to figure out some way to address our concerns,” an anonymous U.S. official told the Post.

The identities of the hackers have not been disclosed yet and is unclear if the suspects are really hackers. China said that hackers were not state sponsored and are probably contractors.

“We don’t know that if the arrests the Chinese purported to have made are the guilty parties,” said one U.S. official who — like others interviewed — spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the subject’s sensitivity. “There is a history [in China] of people being arrested for things they didn’t do or other ‘crimes against the state.”

Two weeks ago, Xi made the same commitment as part of a series of G-20 agreements reached at the summit in Turkey.

“The last two months have been nothing but shocks,” Healey said. “Who would have thought that we would have gone from no norm on commercial espionage and no movement on the OPM hack to a new G20 norm and today’s news of criminal arrests on OPM? This is a string of incredible diplomatic successes.”
